Column of Victory (Siegessäule)

At the centre of the Tiergarten, an appr. 220 ha size park, stands the Column of Victory (Siegessäule), 67m high, surrounded by a large roundabout called "Großer Stern". The column was completed in 1873 by Johann Heinrich Strack for the Königsplatz in front of the Reichtag. The statue of Victoria, popularly called the Golden Elsa, was added some years later by F.Drake. She commemorates Prussian victories of war.

The glass mosaics featuring patriotic themes were created by the historical painter A.v.Werner.

In 1938, Hitler had the Column of Victory raised in height and placed where we see it today in preparation for his plans for Germania, the new capital of the Reich. On a nice day, it is well worth ascending the 285 steps in order to enjoy the magnificent view.
